The Research and Development Background of Hydraulic Elevator Dam

As a key component of water conservancy projects, sluices are widely built-in rivers, canal system, reservoirs, lakes and coastal areas. They play an indispensable role in river governance and ecological civilization construction, it is conductive to improving the ecological environment of the river, enhancing the water assets of the river, and disseminating the water culture of the urban river. With the development of science and technology, the improvement of engineering construction level, the continuous emergence of building materials and the improvement of mechanization and automation capabilities, the sluices construction is increasing day by day, and the functions and types are also becoming more and more abundant. The function of sluices should not only meet the requirements for efficiently using the water resources, but also on the premise of satisfying the basic functions of water retaining, water storage, and flood discharge. The type of water retaining constructions is no longer limited to the conventional gate type, and many large-span, low-head, novel design, and unique sluices with ecological and landscape functions have appeared, which are widely applied in urban river treatment projects.

In recent decades years at home and abroad, common types involve rubber dams and steel sluice gates. Steel sluice gates also include lifting plane gates, flap gates, steel dam gates, pneumatic shield gates, hydraulic lift gates, hydraulic elevator dams and so on. As time goes on, the application of rubber dams become much harder to meet the needs of current water conservancy projects. Therefore, steel sluices came into being. Steel sluices are researched and developed based on rubber dams, instead of the dam bags of the rubber dams, the steel gate leaf is used to block the water to form a sluice gate, which overcomes the shortcomings of rubber dams and be equipped with the features of simple structure, safety and reliability, convenient processing, and installation. It is not only ensures the safe and reliable flood passage, but can also form a waterfall through the top of the sluice and makes a beautiful site in line with the current concepts of ecological water conservancy.

 

The application and development of low-head movable sluices in the treatment of urban rivers has increased requirements for water safety, water resources, water ecology, water landscape, and water culture. Thus, building the ecological sluices is the important measure for the healthy development of cities and the improvement of economic development along the river basin. The common low-head movable sluice gates include rubber dam, lifting plane gates, hydraulic automatic flap gates, steel dam gates, pneumatic shield gates, hydraulic lifting dams, etc.

Beijing IWHR Corporation (BIC), a subsidiary of China Institute of water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), has been engaged in promotion and application of hydraulic technology such as rubber dams at home and abroad for the past 30 years. Through years of market research and engineering application summary, it is found that the existing low-head movable sluice technology still has obvious technology defects in key indicators such as flood safety, landscape, drift and sand removal, investment, winter operation, and adaptation to foundation settlement. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new type of low-head movable sluice. On the basis of overcoming the technical defects of traditional gates as much as possible, retaining the basic advantages of the above-mentioned gates, so that it has the characteristics of high safety, wide applicability, good durability, simple management and protection, etc. Relying on self-raised scientific research funds, the research unit independently formulated the topic of Key technology and application of integral hydraulic elevator dam, by combining theoretical research and engineering practice, to meet market needs and solve technical problems as the orientation, completed the R&D and application of hydraulic elevator dam. Hydraulic elevated dam has been relatively mature and has been put into the engineering application. It has been widely used and developed in 15 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) including Shandong, Guizhou, Shanxi, Anhui, Hubei, and three provinces in the northeast of China, as well as in “One Belt One Road” countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand.
