Introduction

The seawater desalination Reverse Osmosis (RO) method is one kind of membrane separation process.

 

It is the use of a semi-permeable membrane which is allow only solvent permeation and doesn"t allow solute permeation, thus, seawater and freshwater is separated. In normal conditions, the freshwater through the semi-permeable membrane to penetrate to the seawater, this process is called the osmosis, At this point, the water-column’s static pressure which is higher than seawater side is called osmotic pressure.

 If it exerts an  external pressure which is bigger than the seawater osmotic pressure to seawater side, then the pure water in the seawater will be reversed through the RO method  into fresh water, in order to achieve the process of seawater desalination.

Characteristic

The construction cost of the RO method is relatively lower, Tts cost is about  1/2~1/3 of the MSF method and about  1/2 of the MED method .

The operating cost of RO method is relatively lower, Tts cost is about  1/2 of the Electrodialysis method and about 1/40 of the Distillation method .

The product-water cost of RO method is about 4 to 6 yuan/m3 (Comprehensive Cost)
